Definition by Webster Dictionary.
1. a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
2. a feeling of fellowship with other, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals.
To me, this is such a vague meaning to community. Community is so much more then living in the same place, common interest or attitudes. To me, community is about holding each other up in times of need or stress and holding each other accountable when we are not doing our best. Our lovely community at Balance Me Yoga is growing with a wonderful group of people.
I love how much yoga has transformed my life and me as a person. Yoga means “to yolk” or bring together. Yoga isn’t just about what you do on your mat, it is more about what you do off of your mat. Yoga about living your most authentic life, finding your true self and most important to me, lifting up and supporting those around me.
You may be thinking that not everyone does this in life, not everyone gives back what you give, not everyone always has my best interests in mind as I share so openly. That’s probably true, but you know what, it doesn’t matter, I’m still going to try to give you my best self, I am still going to support you. That is what community does for you.
We all have those feelings of aloneness throughout our lives, the feeling of not fitting in to a certain group of people, whether it is school, work or just socially in general, or however you wish to define that feeling of not belonging. The beauty of community is it meets you exactly where you are at any given moment of any given day, it takes the not so great with the great. Always with total acceptance, no judgement, no expectations, that is community. Its not what can you get from someone but what can you give someone. How can you support them, how can you lift them up if needed. That's community.
Yoga is our community, our community is everywhere, not just the walls surrounding our sacred space.
